The Irish Lawn Bowls Championships were held in Leinster Bowling Club from 29th July to 4th August. Greystones had 3 teams and 1 individual in the semi finals. The Ladies Trips were: Sally Ryan, Geraldine O’Brien and Margaret Williams, the Men’s Trips were: Sean O’Brien, Eamonn Harrington and John Keegan, unfortunately both teams lost in the semi finals. Geraldine O’Brien was in the semi finals of the Junior Ladies Singles and lost her match. All players gave a very good showing of themselves and the scores were very tight. The surface in Leinster is synthetic and as our surface is a grass surface it is not to our advantage. However, the 4 players in the Mecredy Cup, Mark Byrne, Richard Cresswell, John Murphy and John Cheevers won their semi final and they then played a very strong team from Shankill, who do play on a synthetic surface, in the final and beat them. Well done to all players who represented the club with dignity and grace and, hopefully, we will have more players entering next year. It is a great achievement to get through a number of matches in the early rounds on different surfaces to get to the semi finals. Next year the finals will be in Ierne, which is a grass surface and we hope to have a bigger entry to the competitions. Thanks, also, to the many supporters who turned up during the week to support the players.
